We recently hosted the Chinese Students and Scholars Association of the Glasgow School of Art’s exhibition in our Project Spaces.

The exhibition, The Fluid Self, was led by Bowen Wu as part of our continuous Societies Exhibitions programme, which you can apply for by emailing our Societies and Communities Coordinator Leilani (l.rabemananjara@gsa.ac.uk).

Read the Society’s review of the exhibition:

“Drawing on psychologist Carl Rogers’ proposition that the self is a fluid, evolving process, The Fluid Self responded to Wu’s long-term experience of being a cultural ‘outsider’. When one is no longer anchored to a single language or cultural framework, how does identity reconstruct itself through movement? By using spatial experience as a medium, Wu presented the self as a dynamically generated and constantly rewritten form, while probing the boundaries and intersections of Eastern and Western cultural structures. The spatial shift between the stage and the white cube served as a metaphor for the continual reconfiguration of modes of looking and the positioning of the self, turning space into a fluid interface that carries memory, perception and consciousness.

“As a Glasgow-based composer, sound designer and audiovisual artist, Wu extended his interdisciplinary practice within the exhibition, employing electronic sound, interactive installations, spatialised audio and post-digital imagery to construct immersive perceptual environments situated between reality, dream and illusion. Within these fluid sonic and visual spaces, audiences were invited to recalibrate their perception and co-create meaning within the works.”
